[edit] Information

Award-winning 1985 Documentary Film of the recording of 'West Side Story' for Deutsche Grammophon directed by Christopher Swann. The World's leading opera singers gather to make a recording of the celebrated musical, conducted for the first time by its composer Leonard Bernstein. This documentary explores, in great detail, the making of the acclaimed recording. Leonard Bernstein was a pianist, composer and one of the greatest conductors America has produced. In 1984—27 years after the Broadway premiere of his legendary musical "West Side Story," Leonard Bernstein went into a New York studio for Deutsche Grammophon and recorded an opera version of the entire score of his most famous work with a star cast, the first complete recording of the West Side Story. The making of follows the participating artists up close for four days - from the first rehearsals to the final recording. In selecting his cast he "decided to go for sound" with the sumptuous operatic voices of Kiri Te Kanawa, Jose Carreras and Tatiana Troyanos. This spellbinding film, winner of the Prix Italia and the British Academy's Flaherty Award, documents the stresses and strains, exhilaration and eventual triumph in the making of a landmark recording.
