[edit] Information

For the first time since 1686, Versailles' Castle is recreating its "Royal Carrousel", a phenomenal and majestic performance of cavaliers and horses. Horses, baroque costumes and operatic music made this spectacle the most popular of all court entertainments, and the only one intended for a large audience. Le grand carrousel royal is the most splendid of all equestrian shows, seen for the last time in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles in 1686, during the reign of the Sun King Louis XIV. Carrousel shows were once the most popular of the court's program numbers, and they were also intended for the entertainment of the general public. In honor of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Andre Le Notre, the designer of the palace garden, Versailles organized another magnificent carrousel royal in 2013. Carrousel shows were a popular program in France for centuries. The background of this almost forgotten art form was medieval tournaments. In France, jousting was banned in 1559 when King Henry II died in a tragic accident, and horse theater developed in its place, complete with spectacular costumes and music. Noblemen and even the king himself participated in the performances in symbolic roles. The model for the 2013 performance is the carrousel royal organized in 1662. At that time, more than ten thousand spectators gathered in the courtyard of the Palais de Tuileries to watch the race of five equestrian teams. The "Romans" force was commanded by King Louis XIV himself. Other teams included "Persians", "Turks", "Indians" and "American Indians". It was at this event that King Louis adopted the sun as his emblem. The expert horsemen, each at the head of a quadrille, perform an allegorical spectacle where the virtues of the monarch were to appear in full light: the Sun and Apollo will embody the King. Entrusted for the staging by Jean Philippe Delavault, the Grand Carrousel Royal de Versailles, 2013 version, brings together the essential elements of the Carrousels of the past: first of all the horses, chosen here to evoke those of the Court of France, in particular these numerous Andalusians and Lusitanians who made the glory of the Great Stable, with equestrians from the Belgian horse riders academy. Baroque music punctuate the show, and costumes decorate the cavaliers as well as the acrobats, before a pyrotechnic finale worthy of Versailles. Staging and design by Jean-Philippe Delavault ; Directed by Frederic Kadouch ; A Co-Production by Equidia Life, Chateau de Versailles Spectacles and Wahoo Productions with the participation of France Televisions
