Guardians of a thousand-year-old culture, the araucaria in Chile and the baobab in Senegal are venerable and revered trees. Refuges for geniuses or embodiments of a spirit, they represent a strong link to nature and to ancestors.

In Redwood National Park California a giant sequoia escaped logging thanks to Julia Butterfly Hill, who lived on its summit for two years to save it. On the other side of the Pacific, a few hundred kilometers from Tokyo, a centuries-old juniper attracts the attention of bonsai master Shinji Suzuki. These two surviving trees, one giant, the other dwarf, exemplify the resilience of nature through the exceptional commitment of two people.

In the garden of a Tokyo temple survives a jewel of nature: a thousand-year-old cherry tree which is said to be the oldest in Japan. Each year, its flowering is followed by millions of inhabitants. In the Mexican province of Oaxaca lives the Tule tree, a majestic cypress that continues to grow and is said to be the largest in the world. A feast celebrates its longevity.

In northern Ethiopia, in the legendary city of Axum, a sycamore fig tree has stood for nearly two hundred years. Once deified, today it is the motionless witness of the Orthodox rites of believers, not far from the chapel where the Ark of the Covenant would rest. 4000 Km away, in the Indian state of Punjab, the inhabitants of the village of Cholti Kheri worship a huge banyan tree. Nicknamed "the sage", it has a gigantic root network that covers several hectares. Having become sacred, these two trees, close cousins, carry the hope of men.

In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the Dasheri mango tree has given rise to a variety of mangoes with unparalleled flavor. In Canada, Ontario, flourishes Comfort Maple, named after the family that has watched over it for nine generations. From the fruit that is picked to the sap that is extracted, these two nourishing trees are the source of flavors that have been perpetuated for decades.
